Tomshardware review continued

You would need to ask Matt Safford on keyboard rating system.

  • Now your review link was published on Sept 6, 2018.
  • TH published the review last week.

Obviously 2 different uploads dated from :us: site to :uk: site.

TH has a bug surfaced that has caused an issue.

The question your asking would need to be directed to TH’s head System admin.

While I can’t confirm it; I don’t think they are a member of this forum.

I’m really interested to see your follow-up review, I won’t go for the 2080 TI. The RTX 2080 is the highest GPU I will go for. We are a minority in this forum, about 85% of the polled people (on 78 peoples) here will go for the 2080 TI in 6 month…

I probably will choose the 5K+

?! Was that really not obvious ? I used it as an example to illustrate the issue, that excessive computational demand by a cutting edge product in other cases was duly noticed, but it was not abused to factually dismiss the product as unusable but the testers then went on to point out which tweaks in the settings would make it run on lesser systems, and how well/bad it performs then.

Pretending you cannot get it to work on your high-end system kills the product, even if you don‘t rate it 2/5 or below, because why would any reader of this review consider buying a Pimax if he is being told that he will not be able to play any of the usually interesting VR games on it in satisfactory manner ? The not-so-subtle message, starting with the headline, is - don‘t consider buying this headset, you cannot put it to use no matter which GPU you run and what you do about it.

Go for the 1080ti, it’s much more powerful than the pricier 2080 for every game currently on the market, and will be more powerful for VR probably forever. Really sucks that this review used an underpowered below-spec card, and a card few people have that isn’t as good as cheaper cards that quite a lot of people have.

What do you mean by it’s much more powerful? From what I saw it is usually on par with 2080, sometimes faster, sometimes slower. On the other hand, I agree that for high FPS gaming, pure rasterization performance, and VR, it is better: has more memory and is cheaper. Plus I do not think we will need any raytracing in the VR anytime soon. DLSS may have an impact, but this is probably still one gen from being really useful.

We don’t need raytracing with 2xxx series cards period. 30-50 fps at 1080p :weary:

Yes indeed maybe a bit overstated, in the used after market the 1080TI is a great value, performance under 4K in 1080P for the new 2080 series is deceiving.

But from what I’ve read the 2080 is on par with the 1080TI for 4K gaming, the retail street price difference1080TI vs RTX 2080 is about 150US here.

DLSS is interesting but won’t apply to the vast majority of application in VR. Sending the code to NVIDIA for 24 hours of cloud computing won’t be available for small developers any time soon.

ray tracing feature could be use in VR, in fact I think it’s a much more interesting feature for VR now then for fast FPS games. Ray tracing is suppose to increase graphics realism this could really be great in VR, just forget about AAA VR games slowed by ray tracing but think about smaller environmental or adventures VR games.

Although it is your name on the article and your reputation being soured alongside Tom’s Hardware. Perhaps you need to review and better vet those who you sell your articles to.

Here is my review about Tom’s hardware.

Tom’s hardware seems to be hosted in two main locations. This causes confusion for the end user due to a poor numerical review system where the freelance reviewers have no responsibility over how they rate the products they test.
If there is any error on one of the sister sites, there appears to be a disconnect with the freelance author and the site in correcting what should be a minor issue.
Lots of finger pointing and blame over ownership leads to low responsibility and lack of timely action when it comes to correcting problems.
Rating: 1/10000000

Don’t worry about the rating…as I actually rated their site 2/100 in my head but that’s what ended up showing in the forum…and what you are seeing is an arbitrary figure that is meaningless.

Perfect…

I know your still having difficulty umderstanding TH has a wide range of viewers & writes Articles for whole of computer users. Even with the criteria of TH being explained so you understand how the rating system works.

But as not surprising we have users whom were having trouble understanding the Author cannot fix TH’s bug in their :uk: website as he is not their employee or site system admin.

If your going to mention something as an example then don’t expect it not to be discussed. A lot of games do a decent job autodecting settings best for a user’s system to run. Crysis is a good example of this. My old computer was no exception.

Pimax headset at this stage the software is not at this level yet doing this with steam’s Autodetect dynamic resolution targets based on GPU. So it got 3/5 instead of 4/5. Pimax said tye software is not considered ready/complete. The previous pimax TH article about headsets shipping states this. The current article states this is a pre release review & that software is not considered ready.

So your over concern about a pre-release article showing a key feature not working is unfounded. Early access means not ready for the average joe. Even though Bob is not average & can play around to make it work.

Good news you can’t buy this headset yet! It’s not on the market for sale yet.

3 extra gigs of memory. Can help.

These are two of the headlines:

“Eating GPUs for Breakfast” and “Your GPU Can’t Handle What Pimax is Cooking”

These are two of the key statements:

“This headset will push tomorrow’s GPUs hard, and today’s graphics cards can’t even keep up.”

"We haven’t tossed a 2080 Ti into our VR test bench yet, so we’re not sure if one could drive Pimax’s headset properly, but the 2080 fell short of the mark.

So the message to all readers is that the 2080 and probably even the 2080Ti cannot “drive the Pimax’s headset properly” - meaning nothing less than that you will not be able to enjoy this headset with serious games until a 3080 or higher is released.

I don’t think the argument that this is supposingly aimed at the complete range of users makes this any different or less misleading. Even less so when thinking of the average 2080/2080Ti buyer - the majority will be users who can be expected to play with two rulers in their software.

As a journalist he will have people that agree and disagree with his writing. Everybody that wants Pimax to succeed will not want to hear the quotes you posted, especially when they are in contrast to other reviewers that have the headset so just exclude TH from future buying decisions when it comes to VR. Or voice your opinion on the article itself as that is where it really matters.

Well let’s be honest. Anyone whom is used to tweaking settings as a moderate gamer to advanced gamer. Whom is interested in a game or headset will read the review & chuckle.

Because:
A) They understand it’s a base review at stock default settings & it’s pre-relessed with software not optimized to function well.
B) Reads more than one Tech site.
C) Has followed pimax headset & knows 3 of the testers are Youtubers demonstrating the headset working at reduced settings.
D) Has read the forums here with folks like yourself. Laughing at reading this topic because this needed to be explained endlessly that there are users with money & little to no understanding of messing with settings.

Not so sure about that, unfortunately. On A) Pumcy goes to some length to describe the different SteamVR settings he tinkered with (to no avail) so people will think he tried to tweak the hell out of it.

He just didn’t find the sweet spot between the SteamVR and PiTool settings like the three Youtubers did, surely because he had less time to spend on it. But that unfortunately resulted in the conclusion that the headset cannot be put to use properly with the 2080 while this is simply wrong. Quite a stinker I would say.

But as it appears that there is no desire to rectify this misrepresentation either - I guess I have learnt enough of what I should think about the review and how to take it, and its underlying intention.

Let’s see if the Vive Pro will manage to survive, no, dominate in the high-end consumer space as being heralded as the undefeated king based on such reviews … or if the practical experience of the users will play a role in it after all.

It just annoys the heck out of me that with the Pimax headsets, where there would be more than enough to pour scathing criticism over, people invent stuff which doesn’t survive the test of light. They come to a conclusion, which then makes it appear as if the shit, which the headsets certainly have in store, has managed to get the better of the brilliance of its not very sophisticated brute force attempt in bettering what can be improved with simple means at a time where GPUs offer more power so the 2016 generation of headsets is starting to look less compelling. I will not expect Pimax to be the technological leader for any longer time, but give them credit where it is due - they pushed into the void the others didn’t want to fill though they could have, and here we are, that makes them king for a couple of months or 1-2 years.

Pretending this didn’t happen to artificially hold the Vive Pro stock high doesn’t make me think very high of such an opinion.

I am not sure what is worse. The review or Heliosurge’s partisan responses. Sorry bud but sometimes you just have to call a spade a spade and on this occasion the article and its subsequent publishing in its current state is awfully damaging. All the more when many people desire Pimax to fail from the offset. This is great ammo for them and those who take stock in arbitrary numbers and hit hungry headlines.

Okay the Vive Pro will hold dominance & continue to do so until there is a product sold on the Market that competes with it.

At this time there isn’t a headset being sold in the consumer space. Truthfully this is disappointing LG went dark on their Ultra Gear Steamvr headset.

Pimax will upon consumer relesse be in a position to correct this as long as they have no major issues like they do currently with the dynamic resolution.

  • But at this moment in time the headset is not released & something they have a lot of testers data from all testers including pumcy & oscar. It’s not fixed & in theory should be easy to fix. The p4k works with Dynamic resolution.
  • Brainwarp & other features need to be working.

Pre-Release, early access, beta reviews should always be taken as they are. A progress report that shows where things are in the present moment. Not glowering how it might be at release. The Article clearly identifies it is not released.

Do you jump all over others who review Early Access products?

Pumcy had to do th review using the standards & procedures laid out by his client. The review was sn out of box readiness & at this time it’s not ready for a full release to market.

Once pimax is at the pre-order comsumer release stage it will have a better rating as it should have resolution targets fixed.

The review is not:

“Okay it doesn’t work as advertised at default reccommended settings; Let’s see what we can do to get it working.”

That is likely because you have free range & control of the content on your YouTube Channel.

Pumcy unlike Youtubers as far as I know doesn’t have a patron account to ask followers for donations.

If you consider Rob you were accussed wrongly as clickbait down with Pimax over your “Insurmountable issues pimax topic”

By what your saying I shouldn’t have defended you either on it.

I will go to bat for any user here that is being treated unfairly by members in this community.

I can imagine what some here will do if one of the early backers receives the headset & it has an issue of some kind. They post their upset & ppl here will pounce on the “pimax hater”.

I stated often this toxic bs has to stop. You might have missed a post regarding a Gamedev noticing his program is not working on pimsx 5k\8k headsets.

He contacted me to find out how to get a hold of the team so he can work on getting it fixed up. That is great news! But do you think there going to want to interact with this community? With how folks treat & rage over things?

Once Pimax releases large batches of their HMD’s to people… things will change. Too many people on edge wanting to know when it will arrive… I’m willing to bet once thousands of units have shipped, the atmosphere is going to change a great deal! Do you remember those days when there was barely any comments in the 8K forum sections and the 4K ruled? Seems like many years ago!!! I’m certain life for you on this forum changed significantly after the Kickstarter!
