Iâm sure it works fine. Iâm just saying that the downside is currently the lack of such high resolution content. But if you throw 4k content at it, I guess the resulting clarity will be about the same as throwing 4k at the current headset, since it doesnt support 4k neither at the moment.
You have to make a difference between movies and game.
Iâm quite sure that you donât need extra power for movies. About hdmi stream, iâm not sure that the new headset will have the same issue than the Pimax 4K. Not sure it will use the same chipset.
Concerning the Pimax 4K they said that they are working on an encoding solution.
At the end you will be able to watch 4K movies with higher fov with Pimax 8K and 2K movies with smaller fov on Pimax 4K if iâm not wrong.
And you are right, i donât know where to find 4K movies SBS.
Like always, the porn industry is first in adapting new technology Plenty of 4k SBS porn content like http://badoinkvr.com/ and I think Naughty America also offers 4k SBS but Iâm not sure. Other than that I think that indeed 4k SBS content is not used that much at the moment, let alone 7680 * 2160 content
Well globally porn is a 100 BILLION dollar industry per year, so yeah everybody watches it. Anyway enough about that âno i dont watch pornâ discussion, lol. Fact is that porn always has driven and will continue to drive the TV/visual industry advancements, like it started out with videoâs. And like itâs driving VR now again, offering 4k SBS already, even while Pimax is currently the only 4k headset out there ! Hopefully the âregularâ industry will follow soon with content.
Yes. I suppose you are right. The 8K model will probably be the same quality of image to the eye as the current 4K model (assuming the screen sizes are the same). Ultimately it will depend on the pixel density (pixels per inch) of the FOV. A higher density will yield better image quality. Weâll have to wait and see.
I think I was wrong BTW, at least for SBS movies. A 4k SBS movie doesnât translate at all to a â4k experienceâ. In fact current 4k SBS movies are intended for the Oculus with its way lower resolution. If a headset has 90 degrees viewing angle then at 180 degrees it uses only 1/4th of the 4k input image to create the image shown on the headset.
Now if you have 200 degrees FOV (horizontal) it just uses half of the whole image instead of 1/4. So yeah, twice the pixels to feed but also twice of the original pixels to use. So I donât think for SBS movies the result will be of lower clarity âŚ
Ultimately it will depend on the pixel density (pixels per inch) of the FOV. A higher density will yield better image quality. Weâll have to wait and see what this is on the new headset.
Well Iâd say that it depends on the relationship between the amount of pixels used in the source video file to the amount of available pixels in the display. For 90 POV and a 180 SBS movie, youâd need about 4x the amount input (twice horizontal and twice vertical), so for a 4k display youâd need an 8k SBS 180 movie (which as 4x more pixels than 4k) for optimal result.
Same goes for a 200 degrees POV: youâd still need double the amount of pixels as input signal, and as the screen is already 2x4k, then that translates to 8k input too.
So yeah, concluding: for both the current Pimax as the next version youâd need 8k SBS 180 input movie for optimal result.
Youâre right that it does depend on the relationship between the resolutions of the source content and the display. It also depends on the type of source content: 2D, 3D, 180x180, 360x180, etc, etc, etc. What I meant was that regardless of how good the source content is, the quality of the image to the viewer will be limited by the pixel density of the FOV in the headset.

The HTC and the Oculus are just displays like your monitor.
When you connect your monitor to your PC you donât have to fool something in order to use the max resolution of your screen with your steam games.
It does not work like that in VR which is not normal.[/quote]
Yes, but Pimax drivers for SteamVR are saying that they are and HTC VIVE.
If you buy a 4K monitor whose drivers tell that he is a 1080p monitor, your games will not be able to use 4K.
Thatâs whatâs happening with PIMAX now.
So OK i am trying to decide if this Pimax is worth buying ⌠right now in Porn movies ( I have used Wankz and NA and Badoink ) everything is blurry with my Oculus Rift and you canât see much if it isnât 1 foot from the camera . Is it still like that on the Pimax ?
I can only compare it to my 1440p phone in combo with an Android goggle, which I think should be about the same image quality as the Oculus: yes compared to this itâs a HUGE improvement ! My 1440p had so much SDE that it wasnât fun at all, thatâs just so much better on the Pimax !
However there are still 2 things limiting this 4k headset for SBS movie watching:
It still doesnât support 4k native input signal. Pimax is working on it and is making progress, Iâm getting hopeful that theyâll get it done
But even if they fix that: To really take advantage of a 4k headset youâll need 8k input movie: the headset is only displaying 1/4th of the total SBS 180 picture at any given time, so you need 4x4k pixels = 8k. There are no 8k movies available. I think the (porn) industry is moving there when a big 4k player is entering the market. I was hoping this would be Samsung with their S8 phone but it seems that the S8 is not going to feature a 4k screen. So who knows when it will happen, Iâm afraid this will take some time âŚ
And then, will the current pc/video card be able to even decode 8k in real time ? The latest generation Intel NUCâs canât even handle (10 bit) 4k (the next gen with Koby Lake processors will though, which will come out soon). So what about 8k movies ?
So in short, yeah even without 4k input signal, thereâs quite a bit improvement. But it will take a while before we can REALLY take advantage of it.
(BTW Iâm talking about my current 4k headset but everyting goes for the Pimax 8k ( =2x4k) headset too, that also needs 8k input for SBS 180, since it can display 1/2 of the input movie so it needs 2x2x4k pixels = 8k input too, for optimum result)
