Subnautica Settings and Results

Just wait! You’ll grow to love those buggers even more soon! I hear that they cause an amazing amount of damage to your subs, too! I never got my subs near one, so I wouldn’t know that part.
What I did learn is that there are certain swimming patterns that work, but they depend on where you are. If you’re in the caves, you can elude him if you know it’s coming. In the open, zag when he zigs and then hide. These have varying degrees of success.
They mainly go in one direction when they’re triggered (towards you!), so if you’re not in that direction after he starts, then you might be ok, lol.
I’ve heard stories of people using them, with some equipment that you’ll get, as weapons against the Leviathans!

@tomohm The Mesmers always creep me out and ‘panic’ is a good way to describe my reaction to meeting them!! :scream:
Did you ever get “lucky” enough to meet up with a Leviathon while in your Seamoth? One surprised me and I swear that I will never forget those teeth! I had family come in and ask if I was ok! Did you know that these hmd’s do not come off easily? Yeesh! Talk about needing to change my underwear!

I lost a couple of them to Leviathons during my stay on planet 4546B … but that wasn’t the worst…

This is starting to leave the “colorful sea experience” to the “An Alien Isolation in deep sea” adventure.

LOL… you have no idea… but you’ll find out.

I’ve never played a survival game before Subnautica. This game is an incredible journey right up to the very end. I really hope they make more games like this in VR. I’m also praying that the sequel to this game that comes out this year will also have VR capability. They haven’t decided yet as far as I can tell.

Ok, reporting back with more findings:

  • The VR patch (VR Enhancements at Subnautica Nexus - Mods and community) helps very, very much. The HUD is far away from the camera and i finally can read what’s in my backpack.

  • Even with occlusion off, there is still bug in shadow/shade (only one eye rendering or wrong/different eye shadow/shade levels).

  • Don’t use VR animations, will induce nausea with time.

The deeper i go, the smaller my backpack becomes

I was wondering what good the radiation suit is if you still are hurt by the radiation and can’t get close to the ship?

If you’re wearing the full radiation suit then you should be able to go into the irradiated ship. If you’re missing a piece then it doesn’t help, tho.

Wow! It’s been a while: they have Nexus mods for it?! Cool!

I agree with tomohm: I’m not into survival games, never played them before Subnautica. I’ve got over 400 hours into it because we had to keep erasing our saves in Early Access. I have purposefully never finished it. I don’t want to leave, lol! I still have the Lava Zone to explore when I get my Pimax!

There is also an ability to edit some text files in the install directory to significantly reduce pop-in. The more you play this great game, the more you’ll start to notice the issues of pop-in. It unfortunately requires high detail setting and I don’t think works with medium.

I am in the same boat (ha) in that I had no interest in the survival genre’. Subnautica has blown me away and I’m a little bummed at the compability issue here. I guess if I had only ever played it in a Pimax my baseline would be different but having spent so much time with it on a Rift and Odyssey I’m not enjoying the game above about 200M. Once you go below that and the skybox/horizon issue is gone, the game is glorious on the Pimax.

I am so eager for Below Zero to be given VR support by UnknownWorlds but I am not holding my breath (also ha!)

Hi, I made some experiements since I wanted to play subnautica very badly too with my new Pimax 5k. I also encountered the horizon error and it did break the game for me almost entirely. But I encountered the same problem with my Vive Pro, as some have reported also to be the case with the samsung odysee. I had some spare bugs to spend and desiced to give the oculus store version a try, since I played most of the time in early access with my rift. (over steam but with oculus sdk) Lukily Pitools give the option of starting oculus titles.

From my first test I can tell the bug doesn’t show in this version!! The Version from the oculus store dates may 2018, slightly after final release. So maybe the game could be played with the steamvr version as well if someone could figure out how to get the oculus sdk version to start with pi tools. Sadly the oculus version comes with its own problems, since I couldn’t get the xbox controller to work properly, but compared to the render bug this seems actually fixable. Weirdly the controller kinda works but the buttons and especially the thumbsticks behave like the function-assignment is out of order. I couldn’t even navigate the menu up and down. But still I could look around with the headset over and under water with no glitches.

Sadly this solution seems to have a big downside since the performance isn’t that good when using the oculus sdk. I think even the settings aren’t that high as well since I couldn’t access settings menu. But still a workaround to explore! I guess since I will buy the rift s anyway I just wait for it to come out and have my final playthrouhg this way if any better solution is in sight.
