I received an Aukey branded Pimax 4K a couple of days ago. Serial number 100xxxxx. I love the size, weight and fit of this headset. I tested some 180 SBS video in SteamVR Simple VR Player. I was immediately disappointed by the extreme amount of ghosting and blur. The trails extended about 5% the width of the screen even when turning my head slowly. However, I soon noticed that video can be loaded directly from the PiPlay app, so I loaded a video and it looked very good. Now I am assuming my SteamVR needs some adjustment, but I can’t figure out how. I have an Oculus Rift CV1 which I uninstalled when I loaded PiPlay. Maybe SteamVR is still using settings from the previous Oculus installation? My video card is a GTX 1050 ti running on a Ryzen 5 1600. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What driver are you on ? Try v1.1.92
I am on the latest driver 1.2.75. I will try 1.1.92. I would like to know if there is anything I can do in SteamVR before I revert to an older version of the PiPlay driver. Surely there is a reason to keep the latest drivers?
Some of the increased ghosting may also be in part to the 1050 card. How does the steamvr test fair?
I would say the 1050 ti should be plenty for videos. I loaded several videos on my Oculus as well as DCS World and the card wasn’t even breathing heavy. I just ran the test and it came back about 25% into the yellow/capable area. I got 2.1% frames below 90 fps and 2.5% frames cpu bound, but I have no idea what that means.
I ran the test from remote desktop, I will try again when I get home. I got a rating of 1.3 (low). I assume that’s what you were looking for. The 1050 ti benchmarks about the same as the 960, so I am going to try to figure out why the SteamVR test is lower.
Well keep in mind memory bandwidth & “bit” acs.
My testing of 2x7950 cf yeild on average 3.4 (yellow) with the odd 6.0 barely green.
Dual card memory acs 764bit single 384bit. So bandwidth can help alot. In Game debate the cf 7950 comes up comparable with 1 r9 290 4gig.
Single 7950 complete no go.(which is disapointing considering xb1 & ps4 gpu equivilent is less but has more memory available)
Now with the cf setup a bit of ghosting in both in 1.2.x in 1.1.92 more friendly with older hardware.
Now running in my other rig a single r9 390 which scores green 7.4
I came home and ran the test again and got a 2.6 with 0 % in both frame tests. I opened whirligig and while running video my GPU is only at 35%. The video does look pretty good, the worst ghosting seems to be in the SteamVR home screen or the Simple VR Player menu screen. Regardless, I went ahead and ordered a GTX 1060. I think it might be more than I need but can’t hurt to have some extra horsepower.
Yeah reg video & 360 video won’t chew up the gpu much. Its more active rendering.
Rec the 6gig model to give you better overhead for games & such.
There seems to be some weird shortage of video cards right now. I got the 1060 3GB at Newegg for $229, the next available 6GB 1060 is $100 more. That’s a massive price difference and not justifiable since the benchmarks for the 3GB and 6GB are within about 5% of each other. Even the 3GB that I bought is now out of stock. This might limit me in adding graphic detail at some point, but I doubt it will be much of a problem for a couple of years.
Yeah the 3g 1060 is still good as @jonnypanic steamvr perf test shows. & in a year or 2 the current card set will be much cheaper.
Interesting on pricing there. Here the 6g model is only $50 to $80 diff depending on manufactuer.
1060 3gb will be good for games at 2k without extra supersampling. Pretty enough. The ghosting may still be there but you get used to it. I barely notice it now, on either driver.
Yes, it is strange. Looking at older reviews, they say the difference was $50, but now it is $100. Must be some kind of DDR5 memory shortage. Maybe this is because they are gearing up for DDR5 in system motherboards next year?
Agreed, I am sure whatever graphic detail settings max out the 1060 at a reason frame rate is going to look great.
Yeah unfortunately computer parts can fluctuate price vs demand (usually mainly Ram)
So I got a GTX 1070 and still ghosting is the same, I was going to try the 1.1.92 driver, but how can I download it?
You will need to delete steamvr settings file
I don’t think going back to 1.1.92 will improve ghosting. From my experience 1.2.85 has less ghosting, but it’s hard to tell exactly without being to test the versions side by side.
I need 2 (well maybe 3) things
- 2nd r9 390
- find misplaced psu
- possibly a 2nd 4k headset (just depends if the firmware in 1.2.85 will work or not in 1.1.92
I have a near identicle i5-6500 build ready save gpu & my missing psu. The ddr4 is a touch higher in my unfinished build.
@deletedpimaxrep1 @PIMAX-Support @PimaxVR
I would recommend getting a hold of the Creater of Drvr4vr as he looks to have a posdibly a way to add plugin managed support to piplay as he has done great work ti steam.
