Hi! Does the pimax Chrystal have wide fov and is it fully wireless like the quest 3?
I just got a quest 3 and with steam link it seems i can play HL Alyx around the pool area while my pc is on the ground floor. The pool is at a lower lever .
Today i am going to see how far I can walk away from the pool with the quest 3, and around the land.
The Crystal had a FoV if 104 wide. The original Crystal will at some point have wider FoV lenses that can be swapped out.
It has a standalone mode but it is not well implemented and as such has min to no content. It has wifi6e built in but has not been utilized. So far these are dead features. @SmallBaguette has demonstrated apps can be side loaded.
The pimax Crystal light is not compatible with wireless and has no standalone mode or Eye Tracking.
Oh. I see. So pimax is still developing a way to achieve wide wirelss fov headsets and it might take a while even before be able to achieve the possibility to play over a more than 25x25 ft area.
I have been testing with the quest 3 + steam link today.
I was able to achieve good quality wireless pcvr signal with HL Alyx running on my pc and quest , up to around the pool area.
When i step on the land though the quality of the video degrades. I have to change my wireless router and get something with longer distance capabilities. My internet signal degdades when going farther than the pool, even for just phone use via internet. Between the pool femce and the trampoline area, the signal is degraded.
Also quest 3 limits the play area boudary creation to a 25x25 area. Then that limit its use. Maybe there is ways to bypass this quest 3 max play area boudary setup and still add some sort of warnings when reaching out of a huge play area or gettimg too close to objects.
What i asked is most probabaly something very few would even be interested in since vr is played by most in indoor , in apartments .
This is another elephant unfortunately. Pimax is still working on the 12k but who knows when that might come out and whether or not it will at that time be able to use wireless.
Greentrailmix on Discord however has had some decent results using a 5kS with a Godwin laptop that has a better apu then the steam deck. So real PC untethered xp.
Ah.
If I understood correctly, at the moment there is no official pimax product and related module + software, that is quest 3 equivalent on wireless connectivity capabilities, even at an fov comparable to the quest 3.
That is correct.
Thanks!
Hi there! Is there any better alternative than the quest 3 , that is currently on the market with same fov or bigger fov , and wireless capability?
I don’t know when or if the Pico 4 Ultra will release where you live but that looks like a straightforward slight upgrade with a particular focus und high bandwidth (WiFi-7) AIO-HMD.
That is correct as ATM they standard Crystal AiO is a dud for the most part with only a handful of apps.
Greentrailmix’s idea with the 5kS is the best option as it gives full PC standalone similar to a backpack VR setup. In theory you could likely use a Nuc PC with an Amd APU using a tool battery mod or tool battery with an inverter.
A DC to DC converter likely best as you could eliminate the power brick.

Here is something on a different note of interest using a rasp pi with a quest hmd.
Oh. I love it! Righrt That would be the solution to all the issues
What pc are you carrying in the backpack and what is the power source for both the laptop + headset and how lomg the power last?
Thanks!

Might this work for vr? Anything better than this or similar for different options?
Does anyone know how long the battery lasts? Also, are they capable to be upgraded with new graphic cards through the years?
The whole PCVR backpack idea is pretty much over, afaik there are no current gen GPU options available anymore.
They were always just overpriced gaming laptops without a monitor inside a backpack with beefy battery.
The prevalence of performant AIO HMDs allowing for pretty high quality WiFi streaming made them obsolete outside niche venues and experiences.
Ok!
Then hopefully someone will make a real wireless solution because i remember the advertising from oculus back in time of people freeely playing around with their headset , but it seems that it is not really the case if the vr boundaries can not be set more than a 20x20 area
I would think that this is a current limitation in technology (there‘s only so much memory the HMD can attribute to remembering your playspace) but more importantly, in demand (hardly anyone with a VR HMD would find 20x20 to be too small).
But when setting up a Quest3 for SteamVR streaming via VD, can you not just set your SteamVR playspace to ‚Standing‘ and disable boundaries? That way you should have an ‚infinite‘ space for VR.
