Sorry to tell you, but 8kx is even less sharper than VP2.
G2 is the best for clarity.
So I’ve been doing A/B/C/D with 8KX/Index/Quest2/Pro2…8KX is so darn clear to me…I’m on a 1080Ti and the Pro 2 just looks like an undersampled/soft Index, since the Index has better clarity than the Pro 2 as well… I have better clarity with the 8KX in upscale mode, and honestly I think I found my HMD of choice (8KX in upscale till I get a 30-series). Seems like I don’t notice the distortions as much too. I also realized the weird blur that happens in Native is gone in Upscale Mode, so I can crank up the brightness with no blur when moving my head (maybe a bit more added persistence though). KDMAS sounds better than the Pro 2…I can’t even get good sound out of the Pro 2 unless I put it on 100% or smash the earphones into my ears, then it’s just acceptable with bad bass. I think the Pro 2 has better colors and lower persistence going for it, but that’s about it. I have better vertical and horizonal FOV with the 8KX…the loss in vertical is pretty bad in the Pro 2.
It depends - I gave the 8KX the nod over the VP2 in terms of sharpness.
But as @TheCalVRsimer had visual discomfort in the VP2, that might be an issue for him with the 8KX too. Certainly as long as it takes to get the IPD settings dialled in - which is quite an excrutiating effort and may take a fair number of days with LOTS of trial & error. And even then, it might not reach a state which you would experience with most other headsets without having to dial in for longer than say 5 minutes… I wish you luck!
It‘s sad that the VP2 doesn‘t work for some of us, would have been so nice to get this package of features in one headset. But I couldn‘t get the edge2edge clarity or sharpness out of it which some others report. And it wasn‘t for lack of trying or fiddling around with the fit - even when I tilted it more than the headstrap would comfortably allow for it only got a bit better, but still not good enough.
Wrong shape of head, apparently.
So nothing I can do about it - next headset please.
Yeah the VP2 really needs more than a 1080TI to get any clarity. The 8KX works SO MUCH better with my 1080ti system. Shame, because I was really hoping to get away from the canted lens design issues. I thought that the VP2 FOV would be the issue for me before getting the headset but it turned out that the FOV was just fine using the thin face pad. Clarity and Sharpness has turned out to be the issue on my system. Darn GPU shortage!
I did a week of thorough testing with the VP2, I used the thin face cover (10mm) from VRcover.
I spend hours adjusting the distance of the screens from my eyes coupled with IPD adjustment.
I have a 3090FE coupled with a 10700K OC @ 5.0 GHz, I only tested the VP2 with the Ultra and Extreme res in the vive console.
I could never feel confortable with my eyes, and the picture was always blurry.
All of this to say I am not sure 1080ti vs 3090 is the source of the problem.
I have two headsets the Index and the G2. I would, in my case, take the Index over the VP2 any day now, just because my eyes feel very confortable in it.
most probably focal distace is the issue, try glasses, there were reports like yours
You know what, I completely forgot I am using prescription lenses from VR Optician on my Index and G2, I have been using those headsets for so long that it slipped out of my mind, but thanks for the reminder.
Oh God, after reading your comment, I tried my G2 without my prescription lenses, and it is not nearly as clear without them, but not as bad as the G2, but still I feel like a fool. I just checked VRoptician’s website, and yes they are planning on releasing a set for the VP2.
I am also getting the 8KX which now I know will have the same issue, interestingly enough I have noticed on VRoptician they have nothing for the Pimax family, does anybody know about a place that would offer prescrition lenses for the Pimax family?
if you have glasses you may just try how it looks like with it, vp2 has eye relief so you can move lenses further from face to not scratch it. Others who wear glasses stated that on vp2 focal feels different than on hmds like index/g2, so your eyes may struggle more to get in focus.
anyone tried this tweak to stop auto resolution on VP2?
DisplayResolutionAuto - anyone else seeing changes with this? : Vive (reddit.com)
It’s for vive console not steamvr. You can enable auto resolution or disable and choose between high, extreme, ultra etc.
I assume the problem resides from Vive and not Steam. Hence the key to solving the lack of sharpness will be at the Vive console
Anyway, I do not have a VP2 so I can not investigate was is ailing the image quality
There also was setting to disable auto brightness adjustment but people stated that hmd gets really hot with full brightness on 100% time
Oof, that sounds bad
I believe it’s one of the reasons why pimax also doesn’t want to increase brightness above some value, after panels backlight adjustment their screens started to look better, especially on 8kx but they still dim, eg on index 100% it’s still way brighter, on 160% it’s very bright. But index is hot. 8kx not that hot, but if they set brightness high I guess it will be also hot, it’s problem of all modern hmds with high refresh rate and resolution
