Unbelievable. Same ugly housing with slighty better resolution. What a fizzer
Expect very slow advancement inVR technology because of the price sensitivity of VR headsets for companies more passionate about money than VR technology. The vive pro is an example of this. Very boring. If oculus undercuts vive pro by selling rift 2 at a radically lower price, rift 2 is still going to win out. One other strategy is to create something slightly more advanced than vive pro at a lower profit margin (slightly more expensive than vive pro).
Hope I am wrong and the vr industry is not going to be this boring. Pimax, we are counting on you.
This announcement sets Pimax up beautifully. HTC have sealed their fate. Basically its set in stone there wont be a VIVE 2 for a very long time. Two full years of investment, Prototyping and development and all they offer is a slight resolution upgrade!! What the Fuck have their engineers been doing for the past 24 months. No innovation. No new lense technology. No FOV increase. Nothing next gen whatsoever
Pimax have a huge opportunity here. Good luck to them
It’s not the big that eat the small. It’s the fast that eat the slow. (The guy that taught me that died too early but with $880 million)
Why do I care about an already outdated Vive? I already have a high res VR headset. What about FOV? Lame.
You basically have these clowns in management pushing the “VIVE PRO” button so they can juice every dollar possible from their user base
There is no “Rift 2” at this stage, so it’s a moot point.
I am excited for the 2.0 basestation tech. When they become available I will probably pick up new controllers and 3 basestations so my hands don’t jump around when I aim at certain angles. Especially since the 8k is bigger and more likely to occude hands close to face from base behind you. The pro hmd itself is a little disappointing. They developed a whole new headmount and it still has a band that goes over the middle of your head.
More than resolution. They also vastly improved the headstrap, one of the weakest parts of the Vive compared to all other headsets. They added built-in headphones, and then created the Vive Trackers and SDK, and are now making Vive wireless. Sure, these together don’t make a next-gen headset, but nobody is making next-gen headsets aside from Pimax, because the market for it is so tiny at this point. They improved Vive enough to be competitive with the current market, that’s all they needed to do.
That is yet to be determined as they haven’t mentioned price.
Come on do you honestly believe that? Rift came out with a rigid headstrap and speakers from day one and is far more simplistic than this ugly thing. This updated headatrap is just an after thought. My point is they have set in stone this is all they will be offering for a long time. Their not even updating the lenses which are horrible
That’s very true their lenses leave a lot to desired. They have sweet spot issues, and are very fragile (scratch easy)
.
It looks like in terms of resolution, the new Vive Pro, EQUALS the Kickstarter Pimax 8K.
What do you guys think? Do you feel a little disappointed backing Pimax now and maybe feel you should have ‘waited’ for Vive Pro, or do you feel 200 FOV from Pimax is still far better than Vive’s product?
Thanks.
In terms of resolution, how do you figure that? If you mean input res, your not comparing apples with apples.
I’ve used the early version of the new headstrap (the one they sold as an add-on), it fixes a couple of the biggest Vive disadvantages over Rift and others. And the knob tightening gives you better tightening control, which is why you get that on many of the newer headsets. The headstrap is not an afterthought, from my experience with it it is just as well engineered as Rift’s or PSVR.
As for lenses, how are they “horrible”? They seem about as good as Rift, though different strengths (less extreme fresnel god rays, but fresnelling is easier to see; slightly higher FOV at a cost of sharpness). Admittedly, I don’t have any experience with the Windows fake MR headsets (aside from the lone real one, HoloLens).
The much improved headstrap, improved resolution, better tracking, these things let the Vive Pro catch up to the competition (while still keeping the first version around as a budget headset).
Not sure what’s fake about Windows HMD’s, anyway the Samsung Odyssey has much a better sweet than both Rift\Vive.
This guy claims new optics

They aren’t Mixed Reality, they are pure 100% Virtual Reality. Only HoloLens let’s you see the world around you. At best they can use their depth sensor to display the vague shape of an object in their guardian system.
actually in term of perceive image resolution he’s close to be right : Image resolution is the detail an image holds. Up-sampling a image don’t give any more image resolution unless you stack many images with an algo.
Q:@Pimax What ist the ppi value from the 5k and 8k Displays?
A:PPI 5K:534 8K:806
806PPI on 200 degrees vs 615PPI on 120
4PPI/D Pimax vs 5PPI/D HTC PRO, if it’s pentil matrix should be about the same perceive resolution. SDE effect lesser with the PIMAX
New lenses
New resolution
New dual Camera ( nice AR possibility here)
Wireless available in summer
2.0 Steam Steam tracking
proven 90Hz in the last version
proven software
actually available in Q1 not a prototype ( probably )
Upgrade policy
Not a ground breaking resolution ok, but absolutely no special reason for bashing HTC. Like Apple, Samsung, Microsoft,Sony and any other big companies their doing incremental upgrades. you can probably do 90hz rate on AAA games with a 1080TI at this resolution so this is perfect balance for the next 1.5 year or so…
The Pimax 8K still reaming on part with it’s 200 degrees and 2560*1440 per eyes so it’s good news.
Not sure which Pimax you are referring to, but it does not match the 8K.
Vive Pro has 21440x1600
Pimax 8K has 22160x3840
and if referring to the input resolution coming from the PC to the rescaler, it still is 2*1440x2560 (and expect the higher native resolution + rescaler to do some magic to aliasing and SDE)
What you are saying would already have been the case with the Samsung Odyssee, which has the same resolution as the Vive Pro, so your question would be a bit late.
“rescaler to do some magic to aliasing:”
this reaming to be proven with a real review…upscaler performances greatly vary from one to other
