HTC is back! Vive pro 2 with 2.5k * 2.5k per eye @ 120 hz

Watch the video  its crisper xD

Nah, I still have both headsets and have both used extensively. Video’s only tell half the story.

Its with gear vr lense mod

I have the Vive Pro 2 since June 2nd now and played around with it. It’s my new daily driver. I reach, and this is pure coincidence (I know MRTV gets the same), 116° HFOV and 96° VFOV. My IPD is 66.8mm. I use a 6mm Kiwi face foam replacement (holed PU leather). The (very) slight blurriness vs the Reverb G2 reminds me of a diffuser like in the Index. It effectively eliminates pixel crawl at a distance though, giving me a much more generous picture than the G2. The blacks are incredible…

@risa2000 , would you like the geometry with min/max IPD at Ultra/Extreme Vive Console settings?

I have that too. The resolution and SDE on the Vive pro are, by current standards, just really not good anymore. Even the Index is a big upgrade in terms of SDE and resolution.

I am used to the pimax xr sde , so it wont be a problem for me , we ll see , stay tuned

Hehe, I don’t think I really understand you. You’re happy with the Vive Pro but complain about the Vive Pro 2 resolution? That just goes a bit over my head

I complain about the smearing/godray/sweetspot about the vive pro 2 and the resolution that results of that for 799€ xD

It’s weird that you’re the only one who seems to think the godray’s are even worse than on the Index. But then again, if that’s your experience then it’s of course true for you. Better return the Vive Pro 2 indeed.

how are the godrays on the vive pro 1 with the lense mod ? they should be less in theory

Honestly I don’t even remember. Personally I never was a big fan of the lens mod. I used it for a few weeks and then swapped back. The lens was indeed a bit clearer but for me personally it made me a bit more nauseous, not sure why. I just enjoyed the experience better with the original lens. But on this one I’m the exception it seems, since the majority seemed to like the lens mod.

I also felt that ‘sharper’ didn’t mean ‘better’ when you just notice the SDE more.

The sweetspot is only relevant during the first 1-2 days, I’m dialed in now properly.

The fun fact is that I enjoy clarity across the entire lens now - all the way from side to side.

That’s the biggest clear FOV I’ve seen yet (I also had 5K+ and 8KX). I’m pretty happy with that.

The glare is similar to the Index (which I didn’t like). The panels are incredible in the Pro 2, the blacks are really black and the range for colors is great too. Not missing OLED anymore like this, you would not believe it.

Whats your ipd ? Mine is 71mm
Yes the colours are insane without any mura and sde on the vive pro 2 !

IPD is 66.8 to 66.9. Yeah, on the G2 I had some Mura. Nothing here, best panels I have seen so far.

After that Cosmos debacle HTC came back strong.

Were you able to dial it in? What is the maximum IPD your Vive Pro 2 supports? I got a reply from HTC that it should go to 72 mm, then @VoodooDE reported it was only up to 70,5 mm.

Ye it’s only 70.5 mm , I measured the fov with an app from the app store with an IPhone 12 pro max 3d facial scanner

  1. Do you have option to change brightness in ViTool? If yes then where is it?

  2. I think there’s something off with tracking. When I move head left and right very quickly I have delays. Didn’t experience it with 8kx.
For example in iRacing when I move head UP then whole cockpit move UP as well.
    I have lighthouse 1.0

  3. I can see SDE on bright scene and it’s very noticeable. What are you guys talking that SDE is no more? 8kx has less SDE than VP2

  4. In order to turn off motion smoothing you need to disable it in ViTool and fpsVR -> basic -> smoothing
FpsVR shows that default option for smoothing is ON

  5. I tried Motion Smoothing and it’s very broken. Lots of artifacts. Beta software didn’t solve the problem. Is it only me?

Please remember we have confirmation now that viveport submits a dynamic render target to SteamVR based on a gpu benchmark the viveport console runs on startup. This means that the 100% render resolution will change based on how powerful your graphics card is, which can also change run to run from thermals and such.

AKA, a power unlimited 3090 will have a higher 100% steamvr render value than a stock 3090, which will be higher than a 3080, which will be higher than a 2080, etc etc.

This really means the reviews with 2070, 3070 mobile, etc are quite worthless regarding clarity, especially vs the G2, which ALWAYS has a 100% render target of 3184 x 3104, regardless of GPU. See here for some limited initial data that has been collected:

This means comparing performance adjusted visual clarity between users is pretty much practically impossible. It is just a major PIA to make sure your render resolution is the same as another user, and based on how many people STILLL don’t understand compositor vs render resolution, scalar vs additive super sampling measuring, and other basics there is no way the common population at large is going to grasp this nuance.

Why they use a dynamic resolution is beyond me. Have it as an option sure, but for many of us who are used to tune our HMD’s and games this is in no way needed. Seems like it makes it more confusing for people new to be as well.
