How to exceed the maximum resolution of 4096px imposed by SteamVR

Hmmm. I don’t have that file in that folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config\steamvr.vrsettings). I wonder why?

I found it here: C:\Users\ username \AppData\Local\openvr

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SteamVR\resources\settings\

But that’s the file which starts with…
“000”: “DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE TO CHANGE YOUR PERSONAL SETTINGS.”,
“001”: “THIS FILE WILL BE REPLACED WHEN STEAMVR UPDATES.”,

The one in the direction mentioned by IG88 doesn’t have the mem setting.

I tried adding that value to steamvr.vrsettings steamvr section, but it is getting removed - am I missing something?

i only tested it without the hmd on, after starting steamvr with the pimax on and closing it, the entry got removed
when looking with vrpathreg.exe then it seems to be the right file
but
it also shows a location in the pimax folder and i can see this setting in
C:\Program Files\Pimax\SteamVRSupport\drivers\aapvr\resources\settings\default.vrsettings
it seems to get removed because this exact setting exists already, if i change the setting in the pimax file to 6000 and set it in steamvr.vrsettings to 8192 it does not get removed, so everything IS as explaind in the header of the file we should’nt change, it only is in steamvr.vrsettings as long as its not default and the pimax config file does make it default so its redundant and gets removed

edit: this setting was introduced with pitool v111

Which file is changed when you use the console to change the value (as in the OP).

console not used

in the first post post of this thread the “default.vrsettings” was changed, but that file should not be changes (as it is stated in the header of this file) as it can be overwritten by steamvr updates (and it was overwritten lately)

next in line was “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\config\steamvr.vrsettings” but the entry “maxRecommendedResolution” : 8192," got removed after starting and closing steamvr, odd but can be explained because only non default values will be kept in “steamvr.vrsettings”, where does the “8192” default come from? answer: pimax started setting it with pitool v111 in “C:\Program Files\Pimax\SteamVRSupport\drivers\aapvr\resources\settings\default.vrsettings”

i necro’d this thread to say fast-forward to today and oculus replaces their main Rift with Rift-S with a refresh rate of …(drumroll) 80Hz! OMG and the 90Hz idealists go silent.

AND … (drumroll) Valve is doing the opposite going for 120/144 Hz
its good to have options like pimax offers

Going to be interesting to see what effect this will have. Norm from tested said it felt like your were more in the world. The presence feeling increased. Also for people who get queasy in VR this will definitely help

i dont give much about that talk without people doing side by side testing and having different people testing it
we’ve heard all that already no sde, no godrays and in the end it was far from that and feeling more immersed can mean a lot of things and can be influenced by a lot of factors
to much hype, no one really tested the Index and so many people buying already

True, but at the same time people are buying it because its Valve and they seem to know their VR sh*t so…

Kind of funny you say this. I mean Pimax was a kickstarter…

Well you know one thing and that since Valve developed SteamVR, you can bet that these guys know what they’re doing. I think this HMD will be really on a whole different level than Pimax. I mean I really appreciate Pimax tried but in the end they’re not really quality manufacturers (that’s quite mild) nor have a highly capable tech team like Valve. I expect this HMD to be 100% free of distortion for example and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be very easy to use without a lot of hardware/software problems. So yeah I kind of understand the hype. Too bad it’s only 1440p or else I would have certainly bought it myself.

Yet Pimax is still the only ones trying to bring something more to the table. The new Valve HMD is just a bump up on the HTC Vive, the light houses and knuckles controllers are the real improvements.

Given the short journey I have had with my 8K, and really, it has only been 3 to 4 months, things have improved dramatically with the Pimax experience. A combination of PiTool, SteamVR and Nvidia GPU Driver updates has been very helpful.

Looking back on my previous post here I would have to say that I take all of my recommendations back and tell people to just run SteamVR 100% both Video and App and then use PiTool Render setting for the resolution changes. I have not recently tried setting SteamVR Video to Auto and altering PiTool Render but maybe I have a look to see what that does but I think Pimax knows the better render targets for their hardware.

Given all the current and soon to be released hardware - I’m firmly sticking with my Pimax 8K.:+1:

Yes, the PiTool software and drivers have really improved in the last few months.

Interesting. Your settings are the opposite of mine: I leave PiTools quality at 2.0, 72 Hz, and turn off Smart Smoothing and FFR. I set SteamVR to use Automatic SS and I set the App SS to 120%.

This works really well for Elite Dangerous, on my i7 8770K RFX 2080 system.

I will also be sticking with my 8K, but I’ll seriously consider getting the “flagship” 8KX when it’s offered for non-Kickstarter customers, especially if it uses full RGB stripe subpixels (like the 5K+, but at 4K res).
