German Hardware Reviewer Compares 8K / 5K Plus (MRTV)

A shape cannot be altered by framerate on lcd, this is what distortion does, it changes shapes.
So, again, Iam sorry but framerate cannot create distortion, its something else, Iam not saying there is nothing, its just not distorded image.

What is this about is the quality of the panels and/or the upscaling chip.
They probably initially started with 4k panels just for one eye then during developing new panel, with better quality but lower resolution came out and they dedided to use it on a lower model, the 5k, but there are some other things that make those panels different, frame rate at 90htz but probably time of response of pixel…its just a better panel.

Not more distortion itself, but perception of that same distortion will be worse. Reason: You see that same distortion for a longer time in each second because the 8k runs at 80hz max and the 5k plus runs at 91 hz. That is 91 pictures per second that are corrected for distortion on the 5k plus vs 80 pictures per second on the 8k. Which headset will have perceived less distortion? @Ludiks

Ok, Iam sorry. I got it.
You perceive more distortion even if its the same, but because of the framerate ā€œyou have time to see itā€ā€¦ok, got it!

Honnestly it must be nothing compare to bad SDE (And so what even SDE seems better on 5k? This is what causing me troubles :frowning: ), its something about perception, from 10 to 20 (+100%) fps you clearly see difference but the highter you go the less 10 fps difference can be see, from 80 to 90 (+12,5%) (sorry if not clear).
But I see what you mean.

Still, all this is…disturbing…I wish I still have my 4k…to run tests before getting the 8 (Yes…the expensive one lower that the cheaper) and comparing once I have it, which is supposed to be pretty soon.

Yes, when the games on both headsets run at their maximum refresh rates then you will see the difference more clearly. The new pitool lowered resolutions and therefore increased framerates which made the distortion perception difference even more visible in more games at the standard settings.

12.5% are ALOT! Especially in something like electrical enginnering or some time sensitive process like distortion correction.

But also in real life. If you were asked to give 12.5% of your salary to the government, you would probably feel it quite a lot

Dear Sebastian/MRTV, I completely understood your theory until just now and I’ve commented on another thread. It would only work if the 8K is displaying a new image that is uncorrected and this new image, being uncorrected, is affected by the physical lens distortion. But the point is it does NOT show a new image because its refresh is lower. So you’re just seeing the old image which is in the correct place on relation to the lens so is appropriately corrected. The theory doesn’t work. Unless I’m mistaken? … Sorry ignore this you’ve already commented elsewhere so we won’t duplicate the discussion. (For anyone else interested its on the ā€œmore distortion on the 8Kā€ thread)

If you are looking somewhere else but see the frane from somewhere you had been looking a millisecond ago than that’s even worse distortion. The current distortion profiles are not perfect and with the 8k you are looking at these less than perfect pictures longer than on the 5kplus.

Again, I know what I am seeing and that’s my theory for it. I know a thing about engineering and signal processing and that’s the theory I can come up with. Pimax is not going to talk about it since they are still pushing 8k as their premium product with a higher price tag so this discussion is detrimental to that.

I still thought it’s the right thing to bring this up even Pimax won’t be happy about it.

Sincerely, Sebastian

I appreciate your honesty and yes thank you very much for bringing it up. Fantastic work, much appreciated by all of us!!

So I don’t duplicate I’ll leave my ideas about the cause of the distortion on the other thread. Basically this won’t make distortion worse.

But one thing is clearer to me now… You’re not being paid/encouraged by Pimax to be pushing the 5K+ which I had a slight doubt about initially. That gives me confidence that the 5K+ is indeed genuinely better.

wow that was indeed priceless. I’ll post this on r/vive if you won’t hehe

Professionals income are taxed from 18 to 45% in France, 12,5% would be a dream actually

Well this is a neverending debate but things a relatives, 12,5% of 80.
Technically, you would usually updrage GPU for a game to run 12% better? Only 12,5% more framerate? Think you can get something like that just by OCing ^^

But I understand you can notice it, Iam not saying its something invisible.

Please do! That is indeed soo funny!

Actually, I’d assumed that was the case. I planned to upgrade to the best GPU I could get, before I backed the KS.

Yeah actually same here too. I find it odd that anyone honestly thought that a 1070 would suffuce, but they did, and Pimax gave that impression initially.

As did I… at the time I had a GTX-1060…I pledged on KS but I purchased the Samsung Odyssey as well because I was certain there was going to be delays… the issue for me though, I thought if the minimum requirement for the Pimax was 1070 as-per KS… then the GTX-1080 I purchased along with my Samsung should be enough. WRONG!!!

wow… I’m really disappointed from the 8k :frowning: i definitely sell my pledge…acutally somebody already bid on ebay, so its for sure now. I’m happy that i could at least make some money with that (so far double from what i paid) and i can use that money next year for a better headset. i really hope the starVR One will be cheaper than expected at least after some month after its available …maybe i can buy it in one year
