Finally I received PIMAX VISION 8KX today [Review]

I’m not sure what distortion has to do with 6dof tracking?

Who is saying that? It seems the majority doesn’t seem to see any distortion in Pimax so it’s very well possible he doesn’t see it neither. But this particular user just said he thought that the FoV wouldn’t matter, which implies he probably has a different idea of what distortion is, wouldn’t you agree?

Most users will not perceive any distortion, or if they see any, it will be after having the headset for quite a while. Remember, it took me months, after hundreds of hours, to see any at all in the 8kX, and then only after specifically looking for it, in the most sensitive use case.

@Djonko Without being able to move one’s head in all dimensions, the distortion is even more difficult to perceive.

@coverman We are really very interested in hearing more about this chromatic aberration. This could very be a manufacturing defect, or shipping damage.

To me it’s all about moving X, Y, not about the depth. I don’t see how that would add to the distortion effect but I guess we’re all different.

Indeed, the distortion is present, with exactly the same effects, when moving only in X/Y/Z rotation. However, moving in X/Y/Z translation does allow the human visual system to more easily recognize something unnatural is happening.

brightness -4 contrast +1 is to get a good tone not a max brightness.
It is adjusted according to the video source, so please do not regard it as very important.

PiTool RQ at 1.0 and steam VR super sampling

Thank you, I’ll try it.

@coverman Any additional info about chromatic aberation please?

Taking a picture of a VR display is very difficult.
I tried it.

Notice the edges of the transparent black menu background.
The top of the rim is yellow and the sides are bit blue.

Visible to my naked eyes, but my eyes are tired?

I have made a research and all VR headsets have chromatic aberration

i read a paper where a team… found a procedure to measure it

To fight chromatic aberration are involved software algorithms

I was thinking the same :joy:
Seems like this…
“You see distortions…”
giphy
Or " You don’t see distortions…"
Depending on your side of the distortion… .

Hi,

If you can, can you please elaborate on this statement?:

The display brightness dynamic range is bit narrow.
I adjusted the contrast and brightness settings on Pitool, but that wasn’t enough.
I think it is necessary to control about the gamma curve.
I don’t know if it is possible or not.

Additionally, @SweViver: Does PiTool’s brightness setting control the hardware backlight (intensity of the backlight measured in nits or lux), or is it only a software brightness adjustment?

@coverman Ok, I see the chromatic distortion in those images. Please inform, do you see similar chromatic aberration at the edges of text, or just the edges of the big panels?

My sense of scale might be wrong, but that looks much more severe than I would expect for an 8kX (or any modern Pimax), unless that is somehow a SteamVR overlay (which the chromatic aberation correction software cannot address).

Hi @coverman I noticed with Project Cars 2/the Madness engine, that changing the exposure compensation over 1.0, maybe 1.2/1.3 can help. See this screenshot for AMS2, change that highlighted value over 1.0, it may help. I’ve noticed a dull brightness, even on other headsets, until I changed that and also enabling Post-Processing Filters On. If this is the only game that was tested, that could be why you think the headset is low in brightness.

Good thinking. I have to use similar adjustments of DCS World Gamma settings every time I use a different headset, among other things. Anything with bright ‘natural’ green scenery tends to be finicky.

Are those photos made with render quality at 0.75 ?

This phenomenon needs to be confirmed in multiple game titles.
I think it only appears in the Automobilista2 in-game menu screen.

The same was true for render quarity 0.75 and 1.0.
It is the same even when the post effect is turned off.

But it may be a unique drawing representation.

I need time to test. And today is still the first day.

I played it yesternight… I did not see those distortions in real in the 8k+, but clearly in your image. I will check tonight with less sleepy eyes I hope.

Chromatic aberration should not be happening within a single VR app, only between VR overlays like OVRDrop and underlying VR Apps. Unless maybe you are using Oculus API (no SteamVR running).

To get best visual quality in general, try render quality 1.25, and 2700 vertical pixels in SteamVR Video resolution settings.

Backer #13, it just arrived. Sadly I have a full day of work before I can get it setup.

On the plus side, I have the next week off. So lots of VR time.

I definitely get chromatic abberation with my 5k+, but it’s nowhere near as annoying as the blue line rendered on the outside areas in some games (fallout 4 comes to mind, does this very bad regardless of FOV setting).
