Elite Dangerous Setup Guide - Lets make it Dark Again :)

Throttling perhaps overheating issue ?

My 8700K is lapped and delidded and never goes above 40degC. And my GPU hits 2150MHz and doesn’t go above 60. So no, I don’t think so. Did you read what I said? CPU usage and GPU usage are the same. It’s the file/settings

I just read and quoted the bit where yous said after 10 minutes playing that gpu usage dropped and the screen would stutter, that’s just a fairly typical symptom of overheating which I’ve experienced myself. Not saying that’s the problem just a suggestion, your GPU doesn’t have to get extremely hot to overheat, if there’s a damaged part they can start to fail at low temperatures as well.

If I over clock to much Elite stutters and even locks up, no other games I have do this, its very strange, :thinking:

I can play Witcher 3 at max settings with no issues

The only thing I changed back is the file. May need more work

Your GPU might be throttling down (reducing clock rate) to avoid overheating.

I suggest that you verify that your case fans are running smoothly and that vents are clear of dust. I clean my case and fans every few months, as regular maintenance.

That’s not code, only configuration setting overrides. One or more of those settings is too high for your system to perform well. Have you tried what I previously suggested? https://community.openmr.ai/t/elite-dangerous-setup-guide-lets-make-it-dark-again/13334/37?u=neal_white_iii

settings from pastebin only consume video ram - probably his video ram is OC too high…

Are you both using these settings on your Pimax?

If so, what’s your GPU settings? I’m going to try these settings again and see if reducing my OC helps. I doubt it

Since Today I’m using Asus RTX 2080 TI Strix Gaming OC, I was able to reproduced your issue , ED hang or stutter when I had OC 2150~2100 mhz . I was very close to star when it happens, lowering OC to 2040 Mhz helps me but still temps was high like 74 Celsius . I suggest you to tweak your OC, voltage , power plan and fan RPMs & use fpsVr app , you will see your temps at overlay during game session.
Now I’m pretty sure that this issue is related with high brightness and saturation ratio , that’s why we need to be careful with our OC values.

More than happy to eat humble pie if it works. I’ll be testing over the next week

Yes i had the sharp line problem in the galactic plane on my VivePro. Fixed it by upping galaxy textures to 4K in the graphicsconfigurationoverride.xml

	<GalaxyBackground>
		<Low>
		  <LocalisationName>$QUALITY_LOW;</LocalisationName>
		  <TextureSize>512</TextureSize>
		</Low>
		<Medium>
		  <LocalisationName>$QUALITY_MEDIUM;</LocalisationName>
		  <TextureSize>1024</TextureSize>
		</Medium>
		<High>
		  <LocalisationName>$QUALITY_HIGH;</LocalisationName>
		  <TextureSize>4096</TextureSize>
		</High>
  </GalaxyBackground>

I don’t have the Pimax yet but I tried your settings with my Vive and am very impressed. Result was so good I wondered why I was waiting for a Pimax when my Vive can look and play this good!

Also tried your Assetto setting, successfully as well I might add. Good job! :grin:

I reduced my card OC. It has really helped. I also took SOME of your settings and applied them. Thanks CMDR

Hi Yata_PL

Just to add my voice as well…thanks for the settings work. I have also taken some of your settings to my 1080ti rig and its sharpened everything up considerably from the defaults I started with. I’ve left the 3.3 haze and stuff in, as I’m weird and like them :slight_smile:

I wonder if you have also come across the effect/bug where if you are close to a star and its in your left or right eye it causes that panel to ā€œauto-dimā€ and mismatches the two causing an effect like you have one lens of sunglasses over one eye and the other with none? I’ve reported the bug to Frontier as it appears to be in their code rather than Pimax’s, but I’m surprised more haven’t seen this (its also been reported on the Rift).

I recall somebody (maybe it was you…:7) made a bug report about that during beta. Looks like each camera is dealt with separately, so that when yawing towards the bright light source, the close eye crosses the 90°-ish threshold where either the tonemapping curve, or the dimming feature of the ship canopy kicks in (EDIT: …slightly ahead of the far one - maybe one should finish a sentence, if one have begun it :P)… :7
