I also believe that one of the reason I don’t have issues is because I use corrective glasses as I have a very small IPD (60.5) and I am able to make enough corrections to make the view clear with only a little edge distortion. But again, multi element lenses with enough mechanical adjustments per eye would be the way to go if we could afford it. Eye repair is another option for sure
Many people see distortions and do not need glasses.
So I was sure I tried my 8KX without glasses before and saw distortions, but I tried it again without glasses the other day, and I saw no distortions. Maybe I dialed the IPD in better, who knows. I also noticed that the edges of my view were clearer than straight ahead, but with glasses, it’s clearer straight ahead than on the sides. Seems the lenses have many different focal lengths depending on where you look, and I think that messes with people. Either we need a distortion profilefor glasses wearers, including if the glasses are more rounded or flat (I’ve tried multiple pairs of glasses, which gave different amounts of distortion), or two HMD types, one with lenses designed for glasses, one without (or just a focus dial…). I’m wondering if wearing glasses will affect the Pro 2, maybe some have more/less clarity with/without glasses?
Slightly OT, but I was also thinking about binocular overlap and how companies have to make lenses that cater to everyone. It’s going to be almost impossible to have an overlap bigger than what we have now if we’re catering to people with lower IPD, since eventually the lenses will hit each other. Since I have a wider IPD, I’d prefer lenses designed for that, which can yield a bigger overlap, and a “small” IPD headset sold separately, which will have a lower overlap. Hopefully I’m wrong and something amazing is figured out to give everyone 120 degrees overlap like IRL.

Distortion profile adjustment (just a basic five points on horizontal/vertical axes) is actually a really good idea for PiTool. Would probably end most remaining complaints about distortion.
It would be even much better in pe. Imagine flipping through some presets while immediately seeing the effects. Would be really nice
Obviously, but I would expect the algorithm to be implemented in PiTool, and maybe then settable from PE as well.
Thinking more about this, just having a few presets for the distortion profiles with a warning ‘only recommended for glasses wearers or software IPD users’ would be even easier to implement and nearly as effective.
Gotta say although I’ve spent hours trying to get my X to fit well, I noticed within the last few days that if I fit it while it basically hangs onto my forehead(bottom of the facepad not touching anything, what feels like an extreme angle with the headset an inch away from my cheeks), I have practically no distortion besides what my glasses normally do IRL. I didn’t think my forehead was that big (lol) since other headsets fit fine… I added padding only to the bottom of the thin facepad (previously only used the thick fom due to glasses), and now the thin works with glasses with a decent amount of room and no distortion. I think since the thick worked “better” for me, I barely used or tried the thin without extra foam added. Manually measuring FOV and overlap I get the exact numbers as HMDQ, while I previously had less FOV/overlap when using a lot of extra padding, so I think I’m going to change my posts that note I have distortion with my “fix” to help others. It “feels” like I have a bit less vertical FOV downwards, but the extra FOV I had was too distorted when it was at the wrong angle. Again, the measurements work out, and I have ~ 5 less degrees FOV downwards than an Index, which is normal and very usable and better than Pro 2/Quest 2 etc. The image can get slightly “blurry” on the edges, but that’s when looking at the edges unnaturally, in spots that other headsets don’t even have since the FOV is cut off. Looking forward it’s clear everywhere. Without glasses, I see clearly on the edges, but not in front, that’s just the nature of two different lenses fighting aginst each other I guess. Older glasses look decently clear everywhere.
This is a wall of text so I’ll just make it easy:
TLDR: No more distortion, no need for IPD adjustments, and world scale looks perfect by doing this:
Thin foam, angle the headset outwards from the bottom so it almost feels like an inch away from your cheeks. I added some insulation foam strips + velcro just to the bottom of the facepadding.
I think using the thick foam if you have a relatively bigger forehead can make things worse or just not fix the issue, because you lose clarity the further from the lenses you go, and you lose some binocular overlap too. This minimal amount of modding prevents a bad alignment between eyes that happens when doing extreme facepad mods.
I think what you discovered probably just gives more support to the idea that reports of troublesome distortion with the Pimax headsets are due to fitment issues. Some people will have facial characteristics that make it trickier to dial in an image that doesn’t have distortion. For me the only distortion I’ve ever seen was in the far corners of the screen in a location that I have to look unnaturally with my eyes to see. In normal use I’ve never had an issue with distortion on my 8KX.
