VR HMDs have lenses that make the screens appear as if they were farther from the eye than they actually are.
The Vive and the Rift have about 2m, which is perfect for people with perfect vision or who are far sighted. I have read that the Pimax 4k uses a shorter distance, which fits people who are near-sighted better. This could be part of the poor reception by some of the western customers (which I’ve heard are less commonly afflicted by short-sightedness than Chinese people).
I was under the impression that for the 8k, Pimax is changing their lens design to a longer focus distance. Does anybody have info about that? If that’s true, what distance would that be? Would it be possible for those of us who are near-sighted to choose lenses with a shorter focal distance?
Unfortunately, I’m not sure option 1 will work for me. I wear multifocal “progressive” lenses. My concern is that only a small part of the screen will be in focus for me, when wearing my normal glasses.
Neal white iii, I wear multifocal progressives too and yes they have the problem your worried about. ( I have a Vive) I got a pair of prescription lens made for the vive and they improved the experience a lot. I got mine from:
They arrived from Germany faster then their advertised shipping time. There are others out there but these seemed right for me and I am satisfied with them.
I hope I can adapt these lenses to the Pimax frames so I don’t have to buy another pair.
What you’ll need is “distance” glasses, not close vision glasses like for reading or computer use. I tried readers when I got my Vive. No good. The Fresnel lens in HMDs make the screen appear to be far away not close up. At least that’s how Vive and Oculus do it. I don’t imagine it will be any different for Pimax.
I just realized after making my first post that the companies that make the prescription leans will need the Pimax lens holders to engineer the lenses to fit. For Vive and Oculus you just tell them what HMD you have and they send the lenses mounted in a ring that will snap in. Maybe Pimax can send them a HMD or the specs to allow them to 3D print the holders. Like I said I’m hoping I can remove my lenses from the Vive holder rings and somehow glue them into the rings that I think Pimax is going to give to all Kickstart donors.
EDIT: my advice assumes new HMDs will be built for distant vision but I guess that is not yet set in stone. Pimax needs to tell us (and the 3rd party prescription vendors) what the optical focus distance is.
