Berlin backer meetup

How a headset multiple times more expensive is done.

@SweViver @mixedrealityTV @VoodooDE
since you guys already know about the M1 I would love to know how the 8k M2 compares to the 5k.
Yes, I guess that the upscaled res looks better but does it make up for the sacrifice of 80 instead of 90 hz and the performance demands that may lead to less smoother gameplay even on 1080ti?
So if you‘re around I‘d appreciate if you could compare that. If you manage to test both u probably even won‘t have issues sharing that without breaking NDA.

sorry if i didnt see it,…but is it clear where exactly is the meetup? i mean the address?

What’s being said by pimax is very little, leaving people to attempt to fill in the constant blanks! Some backers are trying to make a decision on whether to take on the time and expense of going to see this headset with no real knowledge of what they are going to see or achieve.

All I’ve seen is constructive feedback, your comment however is the one that stands out as unhelpful and ignorant.

Hi @risa2000,

Spanish people will not go to Berlin for the following reasons:

  1. We do not want to be used for marketing. Our goal is to validate the product to give the green light.
  2. We have not received the M2 prior to Berlin in order to be able to check it in depth. This is bad.
  3. We have not given the green light to M1, and M2 is practically the same device. Pimax is totally ignoring our requests for M1/M2 improvements.
  4. Berlin meetup aims to achieve the “Wow” of the backers in 5-10 minutes and have a justification to launch mass production. This is bad.

In general we are disappointed with Pimax for the lack of transparency they had promised:

  • We can’t talk directly to engineers about technical issues in the private testers forum.
  • We are being used for repetitive meaningless tasks that get out of date with every software update.
  • They are ignoring our improvement requests with absolute silence.
  • And they have us gagged with the NDA so we can’t explain anything to the backers.

The only reason to go to Berlin would be to openly explain to all backers how it works and what we can expect from the M1/M2, what are its limitations due to current technology, and what hardware and software improvements can be made to have a Pimax 8K that marks the beginning of the second generation of virtual reality and that we are all proud.

I am convinced that having a dream Pimax 8K is still possible with very little cost, time and effort on the Pimax side, but they ignore us and we feel totally useless.

And besides, we can’t explain details because we’re under the NDA.

Am I making myself clear?

Cheers,
Neo

M2 practically the same? I hope this one comes out of frustration only since you said you didn’t get it yet.

@Neoskynet you are making yourself perfectly clear and your absence is perfectly understandable. I am just sad for the wasted effort you spent.

I guess @Neoskynet should know quite well at least what M2 is not and this already gives him right to make such claim.

You had to sign up to the mailing list to receive this info, with your backer number and id. This was not published on the forum.

Thx somwhow i didnt See the second mail. Now I have all information

I have doubts that all backers will be wow. And mrtv will not give green light for sure. Next week will be caos in this forum .

Unfortunately I believe that the backers will have the “WOW effect” and will give the green light, because 5-10 minutes is not enough to realize certain important things and sadly I think that is precisely what Pimax is looking for.

However, Pimax 8K has incredible potential with very little effort, time and money, but Pimax doesn’t want to listen to us, and I can’t give details because I’m under NDA.

we have no access for this part of forum

If Berlin meetup aims to get the green light from the backers, looking for the “WOW effect” with 5-10 minute tests that hide the defects of the M1/M2 and justify the mass production and shipping of the Pimax 8K, I think it’s a very bad decision for Pimax.

If Berlin meetup aims to enable Pimax, together with the testers, to explain and demonstrate to the backers with complete clarity and without restrictions the current state of development of the M1/M2, to show them their advantages and also their limitations, to explain in detail and with demonstrations the hardware and software improvements that are still needed before launching the Pimax 8K, then I do believe that Pimax will be doing well.

But unfortunately testers can’t talk about M1/M2 because they’re under NDA.

Note: I have put M1/M2 indistinctly because although some backers think that M2 is a new headset, in reality it is not, because there are really no notable differences with M1 in the most important part, which is the image (SDE, FOV, perceived pixels, etc), because it has the same electronics, lenses and screens. So, basically the M1 and M2 are the same, with their pros and cons.

Several test suggestions for the 100 testers who will come to Berlin:

  • Before putting the M1/M2 on, look at the hardware, the shape of the lens, try to look through the different areas of the lens to see if they are all useful to see the image clearly (central magnifying glass area and flat peripheral area).
  • As you put the M1/M2s on your head, notice how easy or difficult it is to align your eyes with the lens to see clearly, close one eye and one eye alternately to see if you see clearly, move the viewfinder a little (up, down, left and right) to see if it loses sharpness easily, check the distance from your eyes/eyelashes to the lens, move your eyes away from the lenses to see if you see clearly and how much FOV is lost and try some glasses to see if they fit well and do not touch the lenses.
  • Try a Pimax 4K before testing the M1/M2 to compare the improved resolution. The Pimax 4K has a 4K screen where we see half a screen per eye, and the M1/M2 has two 4K screens, one for each eye, so the resolution improvement should be spectacular or at least quite significant.
  • Compares between Pimax 4K and M1/M2 the SDE and pixels perceived in white areas, lighting power, colors intensity, deep black or grayish in dark images, god rays (glare) in black backgrounds with white images, FOV and distortions, whether the central image looks sharp or slightly blurred, how much sharp area around the center you can see, from where it starts to look blurry, etc.

A good idea would be for someone to take a powerful laptop to Berlin with a Pimax 4K and allow testers and backers to compare the Pimax 4K and M1/M2 by changing the viewfinders in a fraction of a second with the same image (game or movie scene).

I’m sure the testers themselves who haven’t had the chance to compare the Pimax 4K with the M1/M2 will also be surprised, and I don’t say happy.

Another good idea would be to take several 2D 4K and 1080p movies with good bitrate (which occupy many GB) and also several 3D SBS movies, to play them with the free player in Steam DEOPLAYER or similar.

Greetings to all, hoping for the best for Pimax in Berlin meetup, but above all wishing the best for the testers and backers.

Cheers,
Neo

@deletedpimaxrep1 This is becoming a FARCE Pimax. Testers not receiving M2 to test BEFORE Berlin meeting, not being aloud to talk
about any previous problems either fixed or ongoing, tying up months of work under your NDA this is a crap way
of instilling confidence in your company.
I have followed all of the so called progress since kickstart and truly if it was not for SweViver and the other hardworking
testers I would think this all a scam.
There is a very easy solution let the testers be invited to Berlin at Pimax expense, let them test all day on the 31st
Lift the NDA with the proviso that any video’s will only be applicable to the M2 and let them freely discuss the problems and solutions they have encountered. These tester deserve this as minimum for all the time and effort (free of Charge)
And Finally it’s imperative that backers know as early as possible like TODAY which games and how many computers
will be at the event.
I for one cannot come as I live in the Aussie outback but am truly looking forward to SweViver streaming IF there are no restrictions

Thanks Neoskynet for the valuable thoughts, much appreciated.

This one confuses me a bit - we have 4K over 110 degrees on the old 4K, and 2x4K over 180-200 degrees on the M2. Would that not logically mean that the sharpness per degree hardly is improved at all ? So why do you expect a spectacular/significant increase ? Doesn‘t sound logical to me.
Or did you mean to say it should stay at 4K levels but has decreased dramatically ?

All I can say, if I go to Berlin and get my 10 minutes hands on to the 8K, I would never ever give a ‚review‘ or even ‚green lights‘. I’m just a backer with a DK2 and no experiences with other HMDs. The testers should give ‚green lights‘, their ‚ok‘ or whatever. I hope every backer going to Berlin sees it kind of my way… I would just attend to see what is the actual status of my investment and I have to say I’m eager see what happened for about nearly a year. I invested ‚into the blue‘ with hopes of a great HMD… so Berlin would be just for me and to easy my excitement… again, I never would write a review!

Edit: …and I’m sure I couldn’t speak for most people, because my expectations are not so high?! I mean, I’ve got a DK2 and do simracing with it neatly 100% of the time. A lot of people can’t even stand a CV1 or Vive, regarding resolution, SDE an FOV… for me even the DK2 is still the invention of the century for simracing. So I would be perfectly fine with a 8K with a lot less SDE, an even or hopefully better sweet spot and a FOV if 170, actually even 140 degrees… I also think of attending Berlin to see if perhaps the 5K is ok for me and would be the better choice using a 1080 (even if I upgrade to a ti within the next months). So you see my expectations and hopes are fairly lower than of the most people… so no use for a review…

Actually I am hoping for many hands-on posts to be posted here giving your impressions if you had the demo, but indeed it should always come with the caveat that it was a very limited time and using only pre-selected games so it can never be more than a mere first impression possibly missing a number of existing issues of a demoed headset.

Some backers will be wow but many not. next weekend will be crazy some talking that is the best headset and other will say it is all wrong. if pimax give greenlight without testers consensus many backers will be furious. i will be one of them and for sure will be many many more.

Yes, is’s a bit confusing. Without knowing what is the binocular overlap of 4K and 8K it’s hard to say if 8K resolution should be better.

Anyway, we should hear some of these tests results in the near future.

On the other note, I have 4K and a little bit far-sited, my IPD is average. I have to move 4K down my nose for about 2 - 3 mm to some uncomfortable position to have image clarity. It’s literally 2 mm shift in either direction of 4K causes the image to go out of focus. AFAIK 8K lenses are much bigger, so I would not be surprised that the image can go out of focus with 1 - 2 mm shift of the headset. Also it took me about 2 -3 days to sort my IPD seetings / find comfortable headset position for the image to be in focus for 4K.

If you are saying that there no room for the prescription frames, then how Pimax can add the eye-tracking modules? AFAIK they both are using the same fitting method (you suppose to be able to use the eye-tracking modules with prescription lenses, right?)
