Anyone knows if 360 degree projectors exist to project video games on panels set 360 degree around us playing a game in the center ?
With the WASD shoes that i made , I find it kind of also cool to play any non vr pc and console games walking in place or even limited waking around a play area, but the thing is that the monitor of mj pc is in 1 fixed area while it would be great that when i turn 360 degree , i still have the game image in front of my eyes.
I’ve experienced a 360 degree projected virtual coal mine. It used, if I recall correctly, 12 projectors. Projectors facing 6 different directions and 2 on top of each other with one supplying bottom half of that section and another top half. Required a very large room, but more importantly a circular screen that is smooth and really circular. The point we entered was a flat door and the screen cut out around that door- you really couldn’t look in the direction of the door without totally breaking immersion.
It was extremely expensive (I can’t remember exactly now but well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars) and had involvement from several Universities and major tech companies to get it up and running.
And as soon as they can run multiple hmds in one large space they will scrap the lot, I was told.
It’s interesting that as we were moving through the mine and watching the machinery and workers in action, they advised us to walk on the spot to avoid “vr” sickness. It really helped.
So can be done, with a lot of dollars and expertise…but not as good as hmds.
